Amino Acids
Amino acids are found in all cells and are essential to all metabolic processes in plants and animals. The scientific staff of Eurofins can determine the amino acid content in samples, which provides important nutrition information about the value of protein found in a feed, food or petfood.
Cystine and methionine are determined by oxidizing the protein in a sample with performic acid and digesting it with hydrochloric acid for 18 hours. All other amino acids, except tryptophan, are digested with hydrochloric acid (omitting the oxidation step). Tryptophan requires an alkaline hydrolysis after which the hydrolyzed protein is analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).
