The analysis of medicated animal feeds, premixes and drugs is an integral part of Eurofins US operations. The company actively participates in AFIA, AAFCO and AOAC sponsored technical programs. Our involvement with the animal pharmaceutical industry - both in terms of direct workload and participation in applicable regulatory and technical workshops - increases steadily. The practice of providing therapeutic and subtherapeutic levels of antibiotics to livestock is well established. The use of medicated feeds promotes growth and may prevent diseases, of economic benefit to producers and consumers alike. However, there is concern that widespread use of antibiotics in livestock will lead to the development of antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria that may be impossible to control. For these reasons, the use of antibiotics in the food supply is tightly regulated. In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA's) Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) has regulatory oversight for the use of antibiotics in food-producing animals. Eurofins Scientific provides analytical testing for animal health products, including medicated livestock feeds and animal drugs, to hundreds of customers in the US and abroad.
