Rebaudioside A Testing (USP-FCC)

Rebaudioside A extracts are obtained from the leaves of Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni. In August 2009, FCC published the Rebaudioside A monograph. The monograph defines a Rebaudioside A extract as a white to off white powder containing not less than 95.0% rebaudioside A calculated on the anhydrous and solvent free basis. The USP/FCC monograph defines assays to assess the identification and purity of the commercial material. The list of tests follows:

• Identification A (FTIR)
• Identification B (HPLC retention time match sample to standard)
• Assay (HPLC)
• Impurities:
  • Arsenic (not more than 1 mg/kg)
  • Lead (not more than 1 mg/kg)
  • Methanol (not more than 0.020%)
  • Ethanol (not more than 0.50%)Related Steviol Glycosides (HPLC) the sum for all 8 related steviol glycoside impurities is not more than 5%, calculated on the anhydrous and solvent free basis.
• pH (between 4.5 and 7.0)
• Residue on Ignition (not more than 1%)
• Water Determination (not more than 6%)
