Steviol Glycosides Testing (JECFA)
Steviol Glycoside commercial materials (extracts) are obtained from the leaves of Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni. The 69th JECFA Chemical and Technical Assessment defines a steviol glycoside commercial material as containing at least 95% of total (seven) steviol glycosides (dried basis). The JECFA monograph defines assays to assess the identification and purity of the commercial material. The list of tests follows:
Identification
- Solubility (freely soluble in water)
- Chromatographic Identification (Stevioside and Rebaudioside A)
- pH (between 4.5 and 7.0)
Purity
- Total Ash (not more than 1%)
- Loss on Drying (not more than 6%)
- Residual Solvents (methanol and ethanol)
- Arsenic
- Lead
- Assay (HPLC seven steviol glycosides)
