SQF Edition 10 changes

SQF Edition 10 changes are more than a routine update. It reflects evolving regulatory expectations, GFSI benchmarking requirements, and a growing emphasis on proactive, risk-based food safety management.

Key changes include:

1. Emphasis on Positive Food Safety Culture

SQF Edition 10 has placed much higher expectation on positive food safety culture. Sites must demonstrate leadership engagement, defined objectives, and verifiable evidence of continuous improvement through measurable assessment plans.

2. New Change Management Requirements

A formal change management clause now requires sites to assess and control food safety risks associated with changes in people, processes, equipment, or suppliers.

3. Mandatory Risk-Based Environmental Monitoring

All sites must conduct an environmental monitoring risk assessment and document a program aligned with operational risk, which is now a core clause under SQF Edition 10.

4. Reorganized Code Structure

The Code has been streamlined from eight core system elements down to four. Requirements were not removed but reorganized, making clause alignment critical during transition.

5. Updated Scoring and Audit Expectations

  • Non-conformances against Core Clauses now carry escalated point deductions compared to standard findings
  • Repeat findings automatically escalate to major non-conformances
  • Greater emphasis on effective corrective action, not just documentation

6. Consolidated Training Requirements

All training requirements now sit within a single clause, with added emphasis on training effectiveness, not just completion.

7. Multi-Site & Central Site Clarifications

SQF Edition 10 clarifies the central site’s role and better defines single site vs. multi site certification, helping organizations with multiple locations maintain consistent compliance and avoid gaps.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. When should a site begin adopting SQF Edition 10?

SQF has announced that January 2, 2027 is the implementation date for Edition 10. But this is dependent on the GFSI benchmarking process so the final date could be changed. Assuming the GFSI benchmarking process goes smoothly, any SQF audit carrying out on or after Jan 2 next year will be conducted on Edition 10.

On thing to note is that if the site gets a surveillance audit from 2026, that surveillance audit done in 2027 will still be conducted on Edition 9.

In other words, the 2 January 2027 timeline applies to new certification and re-certification.

2. Why ‘good, great and excellent’ passing scores are removed? Why?

Yes, the ‘good, great and excellent’ rating is removed in SQF Edition 10. One key reason is to ensure evaluation is objective and traceable. Giving definite scores also helps identify non-conformances more effectively and clearly, benefiting all parties involved in the process.

3. What are the definitions of Preventive Action and Corrective Action?

In short, Preventive Action is to avoid occurrence (for the first time), and Corrective Action is to avoid recurrence (again).

4. What contributes to positive food safety culture?

Empowerment and rewards are two powerful drivers of a positive and healthy food safety culture in any company. Staff at different levels should feel supported to raise queries or even stop production over concerns. Furthermore, rewarding (in monetary or other ways) is a strong signal for building staff ownership of food safety.

5. Who needs SQF Edition 10 training?

Training is highly useful for any teams in the sites that involve in Quality Assurance (QA), operations, sanitation, maintenance and other areas that could impact SQF food safety implementation. Training content can be customized for different groups of audience to best fit their daily jobs.
