Safety-in-Use Testing

Overview of a Safety-in-Use Test

Eurofins CRL's Safety-in-Use (SIU) Test is a crucial study designed to evaluate your product's potential to cause skin irritation under real-life conditions. This comprehensive test provides essential insights for both normal and exaggerated use scenarios, making it a vital component of cosmetic and personal care product testing.

Comprehensive Assessment for all Skin Types

Often recommended as a follow-up to the Human Repeated Insult Patch Test (HRIPT), the SIU test assesses the likelihood of skin irritation, including individuals with sensitive skin. To ensure reliable and representative results, we recommend a minimum of 30 subjects, with larger participant groups yielding even greater accuracy.

For baby or children's products, we can include age-appropriate subjects with Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval, ensuring the safety of your products for all target demographics.

Rigorous Testing Procedure for Accurate Results

Eurofins CRL’s SIU testing process is designed to provide accurate and reliable results. Simply provide individual units of your product, and our experienced staff will handle the rest. At the baseline visit, a dermatologist or trained professional will examine the intended product use area, ensuring direct contact with the skin. Test sites are graded for erythema, edema, and dryness, providing valuable insights into potential skin reactions.

Subjects receive test products, detailed usage instructions, and a daily diary to record each use. After the study period, subjects return for a final evaluation, which includes dermal examinations and recording of erythema, edema, and dryness levels, ensuring a comprehensive assessment of skin health.

Expert Analysis & Reporting

Our Principal Investigator meticulously reviews all results and reported adverse events, focusing on identifying potential irritants or allergens. Mild dryness in a few subjects is generally not clinically significant. However, signs of erythema, edema, or rashes may indicate irritation or allergy, warranting further to confirm the relationship to the test product.
