When a person’s occupation involves the processing or making of products that include PFAS chemicals they are more likely to be exposed than the general population. Exposures can come from the ingestion, inhalation, or possibly dermal exposure to these chemicals. Not only can this type of exposure come from manufacturing processes, but also from utilization of the final products, such as that from first responders and the use of turnout gear or certain firefighting foams (AFFF). Another potential exposure can come from the treatment of PFAS impacted materials, whether this is during lab-scale R&D or full-scale treatment in the field.

According to the CDC, “A person’s industry, occupation, and work activities can impact the specific PFAS they are exposed to, how much they are exposed to, and how they are exposed. Some occupations that are known to be exposed more than the general U.S. population are include chemical manufacturing workers, firefighters, and ski wax technicians”.

Eurofins has developed methods appropriate for conducting assessments of worker exposure to certain PFAS. Click here for more information regarding our methods for collecting ambient or indoor air samples which can be deployed on someone’s person or in their work environment.
