Multimedia Testing Capabilities

With the introduction of the new IEC 62368-1 standard for multimedia equipment, audio/visual equipment currently certified to the legacy IEC 60065-1 standard will be required to undergo a re-evaluation to ensure continued compliance to the new 62368 standard.

The IEC 62368-1 standard also introduces significant changes in product classification. Audio/Visual and Internet Technology Equipment (ITE), otherwise known as the OFF and TRON product categories, will now be re-categorized into the ITAV classification that will encompass all existing ITE and Audio/Visual equipment.

Eurofins E&E can perform all relevant compliance evaluations to complete the 62368-1 certification for global market access. Our multimedia testing capabilities include:

  • IEC 62368-1
  • UL 62368-1
  • CSA 62368-1
  • EN 55032
  • IEC 62133-1
  • IEC 62133-2

What is IEC 62368-1?

The 62368-1 standard is the new unified Audio/Visual (A/V) and Internet Technology Equipment (ITE) standard. It will replace the 60065 and 60950-1 standards and introduces a new Hazard Based Safety Engineering methodology for avoiding risks/hazards associated with product design. With the new 62368-1 standard, manufacturers will be required to reconsider how they approach hazard mitigation through safeguards in multiple levels of product development, construction and end-use.

Hazards are identified in three categories of energy sources, requiring differing levels of safeguards to achieve compliance. These hazards must be mitigated to an acceptable risk level before a product will be compliant with the new 62368 standard, according to the new Hazard Based Safety Engineering process.

With new, technology-independent methodology, manufacturers are able to mitigate hazards without the “prescriptive” process found in 60065 and 60950-1. This means that manufacturers are able to design simpler products to achieve product safety compliance, lowering costs associated with production, design, and the entire product life-cycle.

If I’m compliant to 60065/60950, do I still need to test to 62368?

It is important for manufacturers to know that 62368 is not a parallel to 60065 and 60950. Products that are currently compliant to the legacy standards cannot be assumed to be compliant to 62368. These products will require an extensive review of design elements and components to ensure compliance or determine what changes must be made.
