What is spectroscopy?

Spectroscopy is a method that measures the wavelength and intensity of light that is absorbed and passes through a material. This provides chemical and physical information about the material.

What is the difference between Near-IR (NIR) and mid-IR?

NIR measures a wide variety of matrices, including non-homogenous solids and liquids, and works in changing environments. Mid-IR measures a smaller wavelength range, so it is more sensitive and works well for gas, liquids, and homogenous materials.

What are the benefits of NIR?

NIR can measure multiple traits/ analytes, is reagent free, needs little sample preparation, has limited human error, and can analyze a material’s physical form.

What type of samples can NIR analyze?

NIR can analyze a large variety of samples, including food products, oils, hops, hemp, and dairy. The scientists at Eurofins are constantly working to expand NIR to new applications.

What challenges are associated with NIR?

Some of the challenges with NIR include equipment expenses, the number and variety of samples needed for modeling, fluctuating environments, and ongoing model validation and maintenance.
