Ask an Expert Series - Topic #21

Why was the genus Lactobacillus reclassified?

"The genus Lactobacillus ballooned into over 250 species in the past decade and no longer complies with taxonomic heterogeneity rules therefore the genus is now split into 25 different genera. This change will have a broad impact in all aspects of the probiotic and functional food industries. The reclassification will make it easier for the consumer to make informed choices on the products they demand based on the health benefits associated with them." - Andrzej Benkowski, Technical Lead III of Eurofins Microbiology in Madison, WI.
