Ask an Expert Series - Topic #25

Is stability testing required for infant formula?

"The short answer is yes! A manufacturer of a new infant formula is required to collect a representative sample of the first production batch at final product stage and test it for all nutrients under 21 CFR 107.100 and any other added nutrients - this is T0 testing. The testing must be repeated every 4 months throughout the shelf life of the product. However, if the manufacturer can provide analytical data that demonstrates that the stability of their formula will likely not differ from a formula with similar composition, processing and packaging for which there is extensive stability data, an exemption to this requirement may be made. In this case, complete testing must be conducted at T0 and end of shelf life." - Tammy Olson, Stability Manager, Eurofins Food Chemistry Testing in Madison, WI.
