Mastitis DNA/PCR Testing

PCR (polymerase chain reaction) is a technique that can identify mastitis-causing species based on mastitis DNA detection. PCR amplifies a single or few copies of a piece of DNA across several orders of magnitude, generating millions or more copies of a particular DNA sequence. The method is a revolutionary method for cow mastitis screening and offers significant time savings over conventional bacterial culturing, which routinely takes up to 48 hours or even 7 days for Mycoplasma spp.

Advantages:

  • Test time takes 1-2 days from when we receive the sample at the lab
  • Identify up to 15 major mastitis-causing species or groups including Mycoplasma species, and Mycoplasma bovis, plus Staphylococcal β-lactamase penicillin resistance genes
  • Can be used on treated cows since antibiotics don’t interfere with testing
  • Works on both unpreserved and preserved milk samples
  • Simultaneously detects all targeted bacterial species overcoming the common problem of ‘mixed growth’ results of bacterial culturing
  • High sensitivity – detects mastitis bacteria missed by conventional culturing

Two test panel options:

Full Panel 16 Test Screen

  • Staphylococcus aureus
  • Staphylococcus spp. (including all major coagulase-negative Staphylococci)
  • Streptococcus agalactiae
  • Streptococcus dysgalactiae
  • Streptococcus uberis
  • Escherichia coli
  • Enterococcus spp. (including E. faecalis and E. faecium)
  • Klebsiella spp. (including K. oxytoca and K. pneumoniae)
  • Serratia marcescens
  • Corynebacterium bovis
  • Arcanobacter pyogenes and Peptoniphilus (Peptostreptococcus) indolicus
  • Mycoplasma bovis
  • Mycoplasma spp.
  • Yeast
  • Prototheca spp.
  • Staphylococcal ß-lactamase gene (penicillin-resistance gene)

Contagious Panel 4 Test Screen

  • Mycoplasma bovis
  • Staphylococcus aureus
  • Streptococcus agalactiae
  • Streptococcus uberis
Mastitis Media Plates

Proper use of mastitis triplates can aid a dairy producer in taking corrective action sooner.

Eurofins DQCI LLC manufactures and sells a full line of Mastitis Media Plates for On Farm and Vet Clinic/laboratory use in culturing for mastitis-causing organisms. This includes both Mastitis triplates and mycoplasma plates. Dairy mastitis triplates for Staph, Strep and Gram Negatives (SSGN) are screening methods that aid health providers and dairy producers in identifying the prevalence of these bacteria*.

Item ID: Item Description

JF2KI: Mastitis SSGN TriPlate -Staph, Strep, Gram Negative all in one.
Section 1 Is specific for Gram negatives such as coliforms, E. coli, and Klebsiella
Section 2 Is specific for Streptococcus.
Section 3 Is specific for Staphylococcus

222900: Mycoplasma Plate - For cultivation and selective isolation of mycoplasma

*Follow-up therapy or sanitation strategies should be implemented in consultation with your veterinarian, herdsman, and dairy co-op field man.

Milk Microbiology Testing
  • Standard Plate Count (SPC)
    • Aerobic plate count of total colony forming units of bacteria per milliliter or gram of raw, processed liquid and dry dairy products utilizing “SMEDP” 17th edition.
  • 4-Bact Analysis Microbiology Test
    • Raw milk quality testing that includes microbiological assays where the same sample is plated for Coliform, Aerobic plate count, PI (pre-incubated) count and LPC (Lab Pasteurized count)
  • Lab Pasteurized Count (LPC)
    • Raw milk in test tubes heated to 62.8C +/- 0.5C, survivors counted by standard plate count method utilizing “SMEDP” 17th edition.
  • Pre-Inc Plate Loop Count (PI)
    • Raw milk sample undergoes preliminary incubation at 21 degrees Celsius for 18 hours before analysis to stimulate the growth of psychrotrophic organisms and subsequently a Plate Loop Count (PLC). Is performed utilizing “SMEDP” 17th edition.
Milk Pregnancy Testing

Bovine Milk Pregnancy Testing is a cost-effective and time-saving means to promptly determine if a lactating cow is pregnant or open.

This test is an enzyme-linked immunoassay for the detection of pregnancy-associated glycoproteins (PAGs) in bovine milk as a marker for pregnancy.

While previous methods of testing, such as serum and plasma, are still effective, bovine milk pregnancy testing does not involve the use of needles or ultrasounds and is perfectly safe for the cow. Eurofins DQCI does still offer the traditional Bovine Pregnancy Test using blood serum with results as early as 28 days after breeding.

Bovine Milk Pregnancy Tests will complement the early pregnancy diagnosis methods currently carried out by the veterinarian, helping to improve cattle reproductive performance by identifying and rebreeding open cows earlier. The test has been developed to perform robustly on preserved milk samples. The Milk Pregnancy Test only requires 2 ounces of milk. Test results are available within 24 hours of being processed at the lab.

A1/A2 Casein Determination

A1/A2 beta-casein testing, measured directly on raw milk and dairy products.

As consumer demand and media attention for A2 beta-casein products has skyrocketed, so too has the need for testing that verifies its levels in milk products. Raw milk, which is the foundation material for the production of cheese, drinking milk, butter, yogurt, and other products, contains

  • Pure A1 casein milk proteins
  • A mixture of A1/A2 casein milk proteins
  • Or pure A2 casein milk proteins

Our A1/A2 beta-casein testing protocol measures actual A1 casein presence, meaning that if we find very little (or <1%) of Total Beta-Casein, the casein present in the samples must be of the A2 casein variant. Conversely, measuring A2 casein directly in dairy products would not tell us whether the product is a mixture of A1/A2, or pure A2 casein. However, after establishing the absence of A1 casein, we can determine the quantity of A2 beta-casein alone, as a proportion of total caseins, or of total true protein.

Benefits of this method:

  • Same-day results available
  • >99% accuracy
  • Reduces animal stress
  • Cost-benefit as opposed to full genomic testing
  • Scientifically validated
rBST Testing

Confirm that your milk products are genuinely rBST free.

The recombinant Bovine Somatotropin (rBST) method developed and validated by Eurofins detects a peptide of the recombinant protein in liquid milk products. The peptide is detected utilizing liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometer (LC-MS/MS). This state-of-the-art technology allows for sensitive and accurate detection of rBST at concentrations lower than 0.001%.

By utilizing rBST testing, brands can add a layer of security to product label claims. Dairy processors can confirm that the milk products used in production are genuinely rBST free. Until now, dairy products have been labeled with text stating that a product was produced with milk from cows “not treated with rBST” without any data to support this declaration. This innovative testing will allow for the vague verbiage to be exchanged with “tested free from rBST”. Additionally, rBST testing could potentially boost US Dairy exports to countries that have banned the use of rBST in dairy products.
