Eurofins Analytical Laboratories, Inc. New Orleans Announces New ETO and ECH Testing

We are excited to announce the addition of Ethylene Oxide and Ethylene Chlorohydrin testing services to our extensive portfolio of services! Eurofins Analytical Laboratories, Inc. has recently validated and launched a new method for determination of Ethylene Oxide (ETO) and Ethylene Chlorohydrin (ECH) in various food ingredients and finished products, with a reporting capability of as low as 10 parts-per-billion (ppb).

ETO is colorless and flammable gas currently used in many countries to inhibit microbial contamination in food products. However, it has become of growing concern to some in recent years, due to possible health impacts. In food products, ETO residues are short-lived and the by-product of ETO applications, ethylene chlorohydrin (ECH), is more persistent and included in the residue definition of ETO. The European Union has set limits in food of 20 ppb for the sum of both ETO and ECH. Its use in food products is currently under review with the US Food and Drug Administration and in other countries.

Our newly developed method uses a selective derivatization process, followed by a selective solvent extraction step, to isolate ETO and ECH into the final extract. Through several scientific approaches, our scientists have succeeded in reducing interferences and the risk of false positives so we can successfully analyze products such as spices, fruits and vegetables, botanical products, and others.

“We are excited to add this testing to the Eurofins portfolio in New Orleans.  Successful quantification of these compounds will assist us in continuing to provide robust contaminant residue monitoring for our customers,” said John Reuther, President, Eurofins Analytical Laboratories, Inc.
