Case Study: Microbial Contamination in a Dietary Supplement Factory

Sidebar Image

A dietary supplement company noticed microbial contamination in products before distribution. Using a variety of microbial testing techniques, our team identified the bacterial species and where it originated during processing. The Challenge

A dietary supplement factory noticed microbial contamination and wanted to identify the source. They were unsure if the contamination resulted from spore-forming ingredients, poor cleaning and decontamination practices, or the use of municipal water in the facility. The contamination affected product quality, purity, and safety, resulting in a non-conforming product. We were recruited to identify the source of contamination and work with the client to prevent future issues.

Our Approach

Our team collected 28 bulk raw materials and finished product samples from the client for investigation. Additionally, we traveled to the factory to collect swab samples from around the plant. Custom culturing and incubation, including multiple types of growth media and conditions, helped determine the type of microbial contamination. We used isolated microbial colonies for 16S genotyping to identify the microbe as Bacillus spp.

The Solution

Combining the area swabs with the finished product contamination investigation, we suggested specific improvements to the cleaning and disinfecting protocols, as well as increased water filtration steps. These individualized suggestions resulted in a ten-times reduction in contamination and improved product reliability and quality.
