Pathogen Testing with BACGene PCR

Sidebar Image

In the world of rapid pathogen testing the goals are simple: timely and accurate results. There are many commercial testing platforms that claim rapid and accurate results, but each has many nuances that may complicate the process and the outcome.

Here we outline a few of the key qualities and considerations of the BACGene® real-time PCR pathogen detection system, and how they translate to information you can use to be knowledgeable on your current and future pathogen testing decisions.

Confidence in Results Built on Sensitivity and Precision

BACGene is a real-time PCR platform (rtPCR, also known as qPCR) providing the sensitivity and specificity of detecting DNA specific only to the target pathogen(s).

All kits are validated with the (optional) proprietary enzyme (PREraser) for elimination of extracellular DNA from dead or lethally injured cells after enrichment, reducing the risk of dead cell detection. The chemistry of new assays is further formulated to eliminate the risk from contamination by amplified DNA/RNA fragments (amplicon). Together, these technologies reduce the risk of non-confirmable presumptive positive results and the unnecessary delays they create.

Internal studies show that BACGene is one of the most sensitive platforms commonly used in food safety testing. See further additional resources below for more details.

Accuracy and Time to Result Through Lab Efficiency

The PCR detection kits for BACGene have been designed to optimize laboratory workflow and facilitate conformity, which reduces lab errors, ensuring a faster turnaround time and more accurate results.

  • Reagents are pre-mixed resulting in less pipetting and prevention of cross contamination.
  • The test kits can be used on several different makes/models of cyclers.
  • One incubation temperature and a single enrichment step is used for most matrices, eliminating the opportunity for laboratory error.
  • One method workflow and harmonized PCR thermal profile for all BACGene assays simplifies training and further reduces the possibility of error.
  • Time to result is less than two hours following enrichment due to streamlined lysis and real-time PCR chemistry.

Validated PCR Detection with an Inclusive Scope

All BACGene methods are validated against both the AOAC Performance Tested Methods criteria preferred in the US market and the AFNOR protocols preferred in Europe, demonstrating equivalence to FDA, USDA, and ISO reference methods as relevant to specific matrices. In addition, Eurofins has a protocol available at all US microbiology laboratories to verify or validate additional matrices as needed and maintains an extensive list of matrices verified by the laboratories to supplement the figure below.

Continuous Improvement and Innovation

The Eurofins Microbiology team works closely with Gold Standard Diagnostics’ R&D team in Freiburg, Germany, to deliver innovative solutions for food safety management, including new BACGene test methods, shorter turnaround time through improved enrichment media and additional matrix validations.

BACGene is used by Eurofins Microbiology Laboratories worldwide, which provides a consistent platform for you and your suppliers. Furthermore, Eurofins controls BACGene from start to end including design, manufacturing, distribution, and application of BACGene test kits. This control over the supply chain gives certainty of availability and, in most cases, lower cost per test than alternative methods.
