Introduction

The beef industry regularly balances robust shiga-toxigenic E.coli (STEC) testing with the time constraints of a highly perishable product. Common industry sampling plans utilize N60 and N60 Plus product sampling plans for product. In recent years, MicroTally™ sampling cloths have been gaining in popularity, displacing more traditional N60/N60 Plus sampling approaches. MicroTally™ cloth sampling devices have been scientifically shown to perform equivalently compared to traditional N60 and N60 Plus sampling plans. The rise in MicroTally™ popularity is attributed to advantages of non-destructive sampling, smaller samples that are easier to handle, less worker related injuries from sample collection, and an opportunity for expedited results due to a smaller, less challenging matrix for PCR analysis. Eurofins Microbiology Laboratories, Inc. (EML) has completed a method validation for an 8 hour enrichment for shiga-toxigenic E.coli on MicroTally™ cloths using Eurofins GeneScan Technologies BACGene Mplex STEC Real-Time PCR assays.
