Understanding Combustion-by-Products: A Science-Based Approach

Wildfires and structure fires occur across the country each year resulting in devastating loss of property and life. We are only beginning to understand the longer-term health impacts smokes have on our most vulnerable populations and how we can test for harmful residues called combustion by-products (CBP).

The chemical reactions during a fire are very complex and the combustion-by-products generated during a fire resulted from many factors. In this session we will provide detailed explanation of sciences behind fire and smoke. With the scientific understanding of fire and smoke, better approaches can be selected for evaluating combustion-by-products and preparing for the restoration of fire and smoke damages.

What You Will Learn:

  • What are the essentials to a fire?
  • What characteristics to expect from the differences in fire essentials?
  • What chemical reactions occurred during a fire?
  • What are the fire combustion residues?
  • What are the mechanisms for CBP particles to settle?
  • Where to sample for CBP testing?
  • Which testing to consider for fire and smoke damage restoration and health considerations?

Who Should Attend?

  • Field Samplers
  • Project Managers
  • Consultants and Engineers
  • Fire and Smoke damage Restoration Contractors
  • Emergency Restoration Professionals
  • Insurance Claims Adjusters / Public Adjusters
  • Commercial and Industrial Stakeholders
