Ask an Expert Series - Topic #24

How can FT-IR be used for identifying foreign material in my product?

"FTIR, or Fourier Transform Infra-Red Spectroscopy, is a powerful tool used in identifying more than 100,000 unknown or foreign materials found on surfaces and in ingredients and finished products. During FTIR analysis, a sample is exposed to infrared light energy at various wavelengths. The absorption of energy measured provides information on the molecular composition of the compound to help identify. For foreign or unknown materials, the spectrum produced is matched against a database of reference spectra. Often more than one technology is needed to confirm the identify a foreign material so reach out to our teams to learn more on how we provide customized solutions." - David Riggs, President of Eurofins SF Analytical
