Ask an Expert Series - Topic #23

How often does infant formula require testing?

"Each production batch, or production aggregate, of infant formula requires to be tested at the final product stage, before distribution. That means, every batch of infant formula that is on the market has undergone rigorous testing to ensure compliance to all the nutrient specifications in 21 CFR 107.100 as well as any additional claims the manufacturer is making on the product such as DHA, lutein, taurine and prebiotics. If the product is out of specification, the batch doesn’t make it to market. Unlike other food products, an infant formula manufacturer cannot rely on historical data and product performance to release product to market." - Keren Breiterman, Business Development Director, Infant Formula Specialist of Eurofins US Food Division
