Eurofins has more than 30 years of experience supporting the Waste Management Sector and offers a comprehensive suite of analytical options including groundwater and leachate monitoring, landfill gas monitoring, ambient air monitoring and waste characterization.

Our programmatic approach to groundwater and leachate monitoring at waste management facilities allows for cost savings and risk reduction, whilst also reducing the logistical burden on samplers. Our labs are respected for their contributions to landfill gas and ambient air testing through participation in state and federal regulatory work groups and independent organizations. We also support RCRA characteristic testing for ignitability, corrosivity, reactivity and toxicity. Multiple waste characterization methods are available to determine toxicity, including TCLP, SPLP and CA WET methods.

Eurofins Environment Testing's Support of Long Term Groundwater and Leachate Monitoring

Eurofins Environment Testing partners with clients performing routine groundwater monitoring at landfill sites across the nation, utilizing a programmatic approach to lower costs and mitigate client risk. Our programmatic approach to groundwater monitoring includes many services including sampling support, industry leading laboratory analyses, and customized data delivery options to meet your individualized and regulatory needs. The Eurofins Environment Testing network has amassed extensive knowledge and experience supporting Subtitle C and D monitoring programs.

To ensure the success of a long term monitoring program, Eurofins Environment Testing suggests involving the laboratory in the development of a Sampling and Analysis Plan (SAP). The SAP documents key information that will be utilized in our programmatic approach. Information in the SAP includes primary points of contact, sampling schedules, required reporting limits and background analyte concentrations present at the site. Utilizing this information, Eurofins Environment Testing provides support to clients in the following key areas:

  • Sampling Support
    • Eurofins Environment Testing provides coolers, packing material, certified pre-cleaned bottles with applicable preservatives to prevent leakage, and pre-printed chains of custody directly to the sampling site or office. Our bottle kits reduce the potential for error in the field by providing the correct containers with the applicable preservatives and the appropriate paperwork based upon the analyses outlined in the SAP.
  • Laboratory Analysis
    • Samples received at the laboratory are logged into our industry leading Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) based on the information provided on the Chain of Custody and the SAP. Sample receipt confirmation forms detailing sample collection information and requested analyses are sent to client contacts after receipt to reduce error potential, and ensure proactive communication with clients.
  • Data Delivery
    • Eurofins Environment Testing’s network of more than 80 locations across the nation are linked by a single LIMS, allowing Eurofins Environment Testing to provide clients with one report or EDD, regardless of where samples are analyzed within our network. Our single LIMs platform also allows our analysts to perform historical data review and comparisons to background levels to identify data anomalies. Once data is ready to report, clients have the option to receive their data in one of our 2,500 formats, as well as via our online data portal, MyEOL. EPA 25 Non methane organic compounds

Eurofins routinely performs Waste Characterization testing on solid and liquid samples to determine if material is considered hazardous based on the RCRA definition in 40 CFR Subpart 261. The data we produce assists our clients in determining proper waste management and disposal practices. Working with a trusted and well qualified laboratory for waste testing is critical to ensure you receive results of the highest quality when completing waste characterization activities.

Under RCRA, EPA developed standards for the disposal of potentially hazardous wastes in the United States. In order for wastes to be accepted at the majority of municipal landfills throughout the country, it must be demonstrated that the material being disposed of meets EPA’s definitions of a non-hazardous waste. To achieve this we test solids, liquids and other waste materials using several testing protocols:

  • Toxicity Characterization Leaching Procedure (TCLP) by Method SW-846 1311 is used to determine the mobility of organic and inorganic contaminants in potentially hazardous waste. The leaching process simulate condition present in a landfill as liquids percolate through the solid waste. In the laboratory, solid wastes are placed in a sealed vessel with leaching fluid. The vessel is then rotated, or tumbled, for approximately 18 hours and the resulting leachate is analyzed. The TCLP method includes a specific list of organic and inorganic compounds, and includes regulatory levels for each compound. Federal regulation for the use of TCLP can be found in 40 CFR 261.24.

One or all of the following analyses are performed on the sample:

  • TCLP Volatiles by SW-8461311/ 8260B
  • TCLP Semivolatiles by SW-846 1311/8270C/D
  • TCLP Pesticides by SW-846 1311/8081A/B
  • TCLP Herbicides by SW-846 1311/8151A
  • TCLP Metals by SW-846 1311/6010B/7470A
  • Corrosivity by SW-846 Chapter 7
  • Ignitability (Solids) - 40 CFR 261.21
  • Flashpoint (Liquids) - ASTM D 93-07 or SW-846 1010A
  • Cyanide and Sulfide Reactivity - SW-846 Chapter 7/9012A Mod/9034

  • Synthetic Precipitation Leaching Procedure (SPLP) by Method SW-846 1312 is used to determine the pollutant mobility of organic and inorganic contaminants under conditions that simulate acidic rainwater percolating through a sample. The analytical procedure is similar to that of TCLP, but with the introduction of a different leaching fluid depending on the location of the disposal of the material east or west of the Mississippi River.
  • Soluble Threshold Limit Concentration (STLC) Waste Extraction Test (WET) based on CCR Title 22 WET Section 66700, available for our clients located in California. The STLC leaching procedure is similar to TCLP.( more needs to be written here)
