Grassroots wastewater surveillance programs offer a powerful, community-focused approach to protecting public health. This webinar will explore how local governments can successfully implement wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) initiatives by starting from the ground up. Using the City of Tempe’s pioneering Biointel program as a model, the session will walk attendees through the program’s early development—from community engagement and inter-agency collaboration to pilot testing and public communication strategies.
The discussion will highlight how leveraging a multidisciplinary team—including public health officials, environmental scientists, first responders, and academic partners—can significantly increase the utility and value of wastewater data. Attendees will explore both organizational structures and analytical strategies that enhance data interpretation, drive actionable insights, and ensure long-term program sustainability. Participants will be equipped with a practical framework and actionable strategies to design, launch, and grow effective WBE programs that reflect the specific needs, capacities, and goals of their communities.
