Intentional Adulteration Vulnerability Assessments (IAVA)

This course will provide participants with the knowledge to understand the signs of intentional contamination, conduct a vulnerability assessment, and develop mitigation strategies.

About the Course
The primary objective of this course is to provide learners with a comprehensive understanding of Intentional Adulteration Vulnerability Assessment (IAVA). The goal of the FDA's final Intentional Adulteration (IA) Rule (21 CFR Part 121) is to prevent intentional adulteration, intended to cause wide-scale harm to public health, to include acts of terrorism targeting the food supply. These acts could cause illness, death, and economic disruption of the food supply. To reduce or prevent risk to the food supply, this rule requires mitigation (risk-reducing) strategies for processes in certain registered food facilities.

Learning Objectives

  • This training is directed to those who are subject to the Intentional Adulteration (IA) requirements of 21 CFR Part 121
  • Provide the knowledge to understand Intentional Adulteration (IA) regulation requirements
  • Understand new terminology: Insider Attacker, Inherent Characteristics, Degree of Physical Access
  • Learn how to conduct a Vulnerability Assessment and Evaluating Public Health Significance
  • Identify Actionable Process Steps and Develop Mitigation Strategies to protect the food you produce

Who should attend?
If you hold the role of a designated food defense qualified individual or serve as a site manager responsible for the development, implementation, and maintenance of Food Defense Plans, this course is highly recommended for you. It will cater specifically to your needs and enhance your knowledge and skills in this domain. While not required, this course would also benefit Animal Food manufacturers, specifically pet food.
